Eharmony, A Simple Review

Launched in 2000, Eharmony is now two decades old and has provided reliable service with aplomb. Based in California, Los Angeles, the company is owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media, a German mass media company. The website is easy to navigate, even for first time users. Moreover, there are several options to choose from, depending on what you’re looking for.

Although the sign-up process can be tedious and the overall pace of the website is slow, if you’re someone who is genuinely looking to make a connection- this is the place to go.

Why Should You Choose It?

Are you tired of ‘playing the game’ and are just looking for something serious? Bored of the same old ‘sliding into my DMs’ conversations? Well, you’re not alone.

Apparently so are 10 million other singles, who have decided to give up their fate to Eharmony.

This dating website has been created for those who take dating seriously. So if you’re looking for someone who you can skip the whole “What are we?” with, then this is probably the place to find them. In fact, the website claims to help eager singles find love every 14 minutes. Moreover, they attest to the fact that over 438 singles have married someone they found on the website!

If you believe in the numbers, or you’re simply a hopeless romantic who wants to give online dating a chance, then this is a great website for you.

Fortunately for you, Eharmony take their job of playing cupid very seriously. They have created a website which is easy to navigate, but might seem a little tedious to some. But then again, no one said finding love would be easy, right?

What Is Its Unique Selling Point?

Most websites or dating apps will throw you into a sea of fish where you need to learn to swim. However, Eharmony is a little more sophisticated in its approach.

Putting in years of research, Eharmony has created (and patented) TheeHarmony Compatibility Matching System. This involves a comprehensive Relationship Questionnaire which each individual needs to fill up.

Yes, it’s a questionnaire, and no, it’s not super boring. What it promises you is that at the end of your Relationship Questionnaire, you will be matched with singles who are actually compatible with you, instead of picking random fish from the sea.

How Much Does It Cost?

Love takes time, and money.

So no, while Eharmony is not free, it’s not a massive sign-up fee either.

If you choose to take a basic one month membership, it will cost you $59.95. But, if you use the plan for 3 months instead, it will cost you $39.95. Here is a breakdown of the prices for you benefit:

    12 months: $7.95-$19.95/month

    6 months: $29.95-$13.95/month

    3 months: $32.95-$39.95/month

Keep in mind that in some states, you are eligible for a refund within 3 days of signing up. You can use this loophole to sign up, try out the website for 3 days, and then cancel your membership and get a complete refund.

Making a Profile

The main page used to feature a typical heterosexual couple, which, if we’re being completely honest, doesn’t really fly in 2020. Well, Eharmony realized the error in their ways, and now, their landing page features more inclusive headshots of both heterosexual and homosexual men and women.

The first challenge you will face is the Relationship Questionnaire, or the compatibility quiz. There are 70 questions which you need to answer (completely honestly, if you really want it to work). If you’re already working up a sweat thinking about it, don’t worry. Take your time, answer them over a few hours, or days if you need. Because it is through this quiz that you’ll really find someone you’re compatible with.

Overall, the questions are standard and don’t require much brainpower. As long as you’re honest with yourself, you’ll be able to sail through the questions.

That being said, you’ll have to answer annoying questions like “Are you emotionally stable?” which, to be honest, no one really wants to reveal! Thankfully, you don’t need to give them a well-worded response to this. There is a sliding scale choice where you will have to choose between “This describes me well,” and “Doesn’t describe me at all” with a few options in between them.

The only thing to keep in mind when answering these questions is this- you are trying to find someone who will complement you. This is impossible, if you end up lying on the questionnaire or trying to be something you’re not. Remember, the right partner will accept you wholly, flaws and what not. It works out better for you to be as honest as you can.

Matching With Someone

Patience is key. Finding a match on Eharmony will take some time. And that’s okay. You are looking for someone to potentially spend your life with, and not just a weekend, right?

A little quirk about the website is that there is no “Search” option, at all. So you won’t be able to browse through a little menu of people who are using the website nearby or in your city. Instead, you will get a handpicked bunch of matches specially curated for you. The list changes daily, so if you’re really picky, it’s probably best to go through the list at least once and check out your potential matches.

The good thing is, the matches are created taking into account your compatibility scores, so you’ll probably have a fine pick of people with whom you can actually strike up a conversation. No more random “hey’s” and ‘sliding into DM’s’. Thank God!

That being said, you don’t necessarily have to match with someone to be able to send them a message. You will find new names and faces in your message box, and you can choose to send them your very own, unique, opening line, or something prompted by the website itself. Or, you can just send them a smiley and wait for a reply.

Of course, keep in mind that a singular ‘Hey’ isn’t really interesting, and hardly a conversation starter. So get creative!

Pros:

  1. The Relationship Questionnaire is thorough and ensures that you match with people you actually have some potential with.
  2. It’s a great website for people who are looking to make a stronger connection than just a fling. It’s specially great for people who are looking for a partner to marry.
  3. There are several options to explore- from senior dating, to heterosexual and homosexual options.
  4. The user interface is excellent.
  5. Simple enough for non-tech savvy people to navigate through.
  6. The website is monitored constantly, so there are low chances of you getting nasty, lewd messages in your inbox.

Cons:

  1. Not a good option for those looking for a quick fling, like you would find on Tinder.
  2. Long, tedious process of filling up the questionnaire and creating a profile.
  3. Finding a match may take some time.
  4. Membership can be expensive for some, but the prices get cheaper as you subscribe for longer periods.

Final Verdict

If you have some time, money and patience on your hands, Eharmony can be a great website for you to find the Prince (or Princess) of your dreams. That being said, it’s not a particularly economical option, but it’s worth a try, especially if you’re a hopeless romantic.

Don’t expect to find multiple matches in a day- it just doesn’t work like that. You’ll have to sit tight and wait for the right matches to come up, but trust me, it’ll be worth it in the end. Not being able to browse through the ‘sea of fish’ might be a new concept to most people, and can be slightly jarring. But you’ll get used to it.

Keep exploring!
