Enjoy!

Bolivia’s administrative capital, La Paz, is home to the country’s Supreme Court, while Sucre is its constitutional capital. The Andes are home to the city of La Paz, which was founded in 1548. The altitude of the city varies from 3,100 m (10,170 ft) in the lower residential area to 4,058 m above sea level in El Alto (the airport’s location). The world’s highest capital is located on top of a mountain.

It is awe-inspiring to see La Paz from the air. La Paz appears first, clinging tenuously to the side of what resembles a great gash in the ground as one sees the sprawling shantytowns of El Alto.

A little about La Paz

La Paz surrounds you: you’ll either love or hate it; you just can’t ignore it. As La Paz surrounds you, jostling pedestrians, diesel-sputtering minivans, and street marches surround you. A sky-high metro system makes it possible to go from the heights of El Alto to the depths of the Zona Sur in a matter of seconds. New boutique hotels have sprung up like rows of altiplano corn as old hotels undergo a mad rush of renovations.

Bolivia’s gritty urban reality will surprise you after coming from the countryside. Those dark and cold corners of Dickensian darkness are a result of the urban jungle: diesel, dust, and detritus; a blinding sun on the altiplano and dust in the air.

A razor-sharp businessman stands with a machine gun holding a bank guard and a balaclava-clad shoeshine boy. Peaceful plazas are reached at the top of lung-bursting inclines. In La Paz, where cobblestones and concrete meet and Gothic spires and glassy hotels co-exist, there is a maze of contradictions that frustrates and astonishes.

Culture of La Paz

In Latin America, Bolivia has a long Colonial tradition. There are still whitewashed buildings and red clay roofs stretching in every direction in the White City, Sucre, and on the crumbling cobblestone streets of crumbling Potosi. Nevertheless, there are some stunning natural wonders and cultural heritage waiting for you in Bolivia!

As the highest country in the Americas and the most isolated, Bolivia is called the Tibet of the Americas. The Bolivian landscape, is not only stunning but home to a variety of ecosystems and elevation varies from sea level to more than 21,000 feet.

The indigenous population of Bolivia is the largest in the Americas. Bolivia is a cultural treasure whose cultural traditions and beliefs are still maintained by more than 50% of its population.

Nightlife of La Paz

It seems there aren’t nearly as many travelers frequenting the designer haunts of Sopocachi as there once were, as there are now more gringo-friendly nightlife spots sprouting around Linares, Tarija, and Murillo as well as the hostel bars. There’s nothing cutting edge about the club scene in La Paz, with drab Latin pop, rock, cumbia, salsa, and 80s music being the norm.

A forthcoming club from the loose association of restaurateurs and bar owners looks promising, and you’ll find authentic music styles such as Latin jazz and salsa, Brazilian, world, reggae, house, hip hop, techno, drum’n’bass, and rock. Spanners will want to check out the free monthly Beats magazine.

In contrast, English-speaking Bolivian Express readers should check out the free Bolivian Express to find out about La Paz nightlife generally.

Best things to eat in La Paz

Bolivia does not offer much variety in terms of food – there are mostly potatoes, corn pancakes, rice, eggs, and vegetables. Its cuisine boasts pique a lo macho, grilled beef and sausages; suckling pigs; and roasted guinea pigs, which may only be for the most adventurous palates.

It is possible to find a restaurant, café, or street stall that will suit your tastes and budget in La Paz. Breakfast is scarce in Nicaragua prior to 8:00 am, and Paceños eat first thing in the morning, then light in the evening.

There is typically a set lunch menu for brunch (usually served between noon and 2:00 pm), which is usually very filling and affordable. Also, it houses an increasing number of cosmopolitan restaurants, both in Sopocachi and along Calle Tarija, just off Linares.

Contrary to Argentina, where dinner begins around 7:00 pm, restaurants start serving dinner early in Chile. Most gringo-friendly restaurants open later and are more crowded until late at night, though formal sit-down meals are hard to find after 11:00 pm.
