OkCupid, A Simple Review

OkCupid is not just another dating website- it’s what you’ve been looking for. You didn’t know it yet. Debuted in 2004, OkCupid is a popular name amongst those who frequent the online dating world. However, this online dating website isn’t like the others; or so it claims. So what makes it unique?

Okay, let’s cut to the chase.

If you are tired of swiping left on Tinder and having to fill up tedious questionnaires on eHarmony, then OkCupid offers you a middle ground. With over 50 million users, OkCupid is a great dating website for those looking for just a fling, for marriage, or something in between.

The majority of its users are millennials between 25 and 34 years of age. However, this doesn’t mean you won’t find older, younger, and LGBTQ crowds as well. Just give it a chance; it might be your lucky day.

Why Should You Choose It?

Although many competitor websites promise to find you your perfect match, using a set of (honestly, super-long) questions and fool-proof algorithms, the results are often not as expected.

OkCupid does something in between. You will have to answer a set of non-traidional, unique questions that are anything but tedious on this dating website. Using your answers, interests, quirks, and accurate algorithms, they present you with a boat of options you can choose from.

You might be wondering how I’m so sure their algorithms are so accurate. The website is developed by Harvard math majors who deeply understand numbers, patterns, and importance in making accurate calculations. Rest assured, their algorithms are pretty safe to trust.

What Is Its Unique Selling Point?

One of the best things I liked about this dating website that it’s completely free to use. Of course, there is a premium account option, which will give you many more features and options. However, your basic free account is not restrictive, unlike other dating websites online.

With your free account, you can find potential interests, message them, and view their full profiles without restrictions. This is great for people who don’t want to spend on monthly or yearly subscriptions and want to scour the market without burning a hole in their pocket.

Most users like about OkCupid is how the website makes an effort to make your profile something more than just a picture and a bio. Instead, it allows you to go all-in, sharing your interests, disinterests, and whatever else you want to add. If you were looking to make a real connection, this is the app you can make it on.

How Much Does It Cost?

Here comes the best part- a basic account on OkCupid is completely free! If you think that most dating websites offer a free trial and restrict your movement within the website, you’re right. They do.

But with OkCupid, you’ll face no such restrictions.

That being said, you can also opt for a premium account that you can pay for on a monthly, half-yearly, and yearly basis. Of course, the longer your subscription length, the cheaper it gets.

Here is a breakdown of the subscription:

For a Regular A-List account, you will have to pay $9.95 per month (if you sign up for six months), or $19.95 for a month.

Premium A-List, on the other hand, will cost you $25 per month (if you sign up for six months). For one month, it will cost you$34.90. With the premium account, you can enjoy many more features such as free Boosts, giving your profile extra leverage to be noticed by other members. Moreover, it allows you to view specific answers to their questions without you answering them first.

Making a Profile

The first thing that will catch your eye when you open up OkCupid is their cute login page. Seriously, look at it.

It gives you just the right kind of vibes that you want from a 2020 dating website. With bright colors, heterosexual and homosexual couples featured freely all over their page, and a new meaning to the term ‘DTF,’ OkCupid has done a brilliant job re-branding and marketing themselves to young, hip millennials.

The game-changer on OkCupid is their gender inclusivity. You are offered 13 gender identities and 22 sexual orientations, far more inclusive than any other site I have come across.

What people seem to like most about OkCupid is their questionnaire. Yes, that doesn’t sound right, but believe me, their questions are fun to answer! You won’t find the traditional, boring items here. Neither will you be bombarded with questions that are more befitting for a therapist’s office.

OkCupid wants to help you let other members discover you for who you are; and not who you want to pretend to be on a dating website. Please answer the questions honestly. You won’t regret it.

Matching With Someone

Matching with someone on OkCupid is straightforward and honestly, quite fun. The first step is something called a Double Take, which works like Tinder. Here, you will swipe left or right on several profiles so that the website can gauge your interests. The unique point of OkCupid? You don’t have to pay an extra fee to undo a mistakenly left swipe.

Since OkCupid has such a vast user database, you are guaranteed to find more than just a handful of swipes, likes, and messages on your account in only a few days. OkCupid doesn’t have open messaging, which is good. It keeps the creepy dudes far, far away.

Moreover, it’s worth exploring their ‘Recommended For You’ section. It’s scarily accurate. And even if you don’t find anyone of interest just yet, you’ll have fun going through the selection the website has handpicked for you.

Pros:

  1. The free account option is excellent and non-restrictive.
  2. No open-messaging ensures random creeps don’t ‘slide into your DM’s.’
  3. LGBTQ inclusive.
  4. Excellent app interface which is easy to use.
  5. Exhaustive options of gender identities, sexual preferences, sexual orientation, etc.
  6. Huge user database.
  7. A fun questionnaire that doesn’t feel boring or tedious.

Cons:

  1. You’ll need to connect your OkCupid account with your Instagram profile (it verifies your authenticity).
  2. You can’t see who has messaged you (or the contents of the message) unless you like them back.
  3. The sheer volume of users can make it overwhelming.
  4. Lots of ads on their app and website.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for an online dating website that takes the pressure of ‘trying to fit in’ and ‘finding someone immediately to settle down,’ OkCupid is your happy ending. The best part about this website is how inclusive it is, so everyone has a chance to be themselves here.

Of course, if you’re a hard-core conservative looking to find your life partner here, you might not like the website as much. But, if you’re looking to explore your options without feeling like you’re wasting your life swiping away on profiles, you’ll love OkCupid.

Keep exploring!
