Known as the “City of Kings” for its refined elegance, rich history, and delicious gastronomy, Peru’s capital city is truly a city of kings.

When you tour Lima, you can see the traces of the incredible wealth the city once had as a city of Spain’s continent-spanning empire. The city’s top attractions include the MAC Lima, where you’ll find Latin American modern art at its finest, and live music venues like La Oficina. You can also achieve healthy eating by going to restaurants serving healthy ceviche and saltado-style beef.

Lima’s sights, sounds, and tastes will delight the senses, and waiting for you to discover it is a magical destination.

A little about Lima

There’s more to Lima than just a stopover at the end of your trekking journey to Machu Picchu. Lima is a city in South America that is highly animated and culturally vibrant. The capital city of this coastal region offers both beaches and business centers.

From Miraflores cliffs, thrill-seekers can paraglide and surf world-class breaks from the tops of skyscrapers. But, while Pisco Sours and ceviche remain great, there is a lot more to the pulsing restaurant and bar scene. The bohemian neighborhoods of Bogota hold ruins of the Incas and attract modern artists. That’s Lima.

Peru’s location below the equator means its seasons are divided only into two: winter and summer. The weather in the area is usually cool and cloudy, with rain infrequent. During December and April, the temperatures are warmest and most crowded. Carnival (not to miss Lima’s Water Wars) and Pisco Sour Day, which is always the first Saturday of February, are the best occasions for celebration in South America in February. National Ceviche Day is celebrated on the last Friday of June.

Culture of Lima

A large part of Lima’s culture is going to see movies and performing arts. In addition to their deep appreciation for Latin music and fine arts, Peruvians are well-versed in ancient textiles and dance forms traditional to Andean cultures.

Peruvian culture is very vibrant, with local people knowing dozens of songs and folk dances and dancing salsa to the best of their ability. It is often the best place to observe local films, music, and drama in Lima’s cultural centers, often associated with one of the university’s departments.

In the daily El Comercio, especially in the Friday supplement, you can find the best information about film, theatre, sports, and exhibitions.

Nightlife of Lima

Barranco is the trendiest and liveliest spot in Lima; it offers a more urban and modern nightlife than Cusco and Arequipa. In San Isidro and Miraflores, most of the city’s famous bars and discos are located. A few surprisingly sophisticated nightclubs can be found in the resort of Asia, 110km south, where the party sometimes continues into the summer (Jan-March).

Music is another great reason for traveling to the capital, with folk groups like peñas, Latin jazz, guitar bands, reggae, and reggaeton. Here you can hear all types of Peruvian music, and some varieties are even better than those in other parts of the country, like salsa and Afro-Peruvian.

Even the Andean folk music can be very strong in Arequipa (though Puno, Cusco, and Santiago are more likely to come out on top).

Best bars in Lima

La Noche

As a cultural bar, this place just celebrated its 20th birthday, and its owners (a Spanish and Peruvian couple) organize concerts, plays, and comedy shows. There is a bar connected to a cultural center located in the middle of Barranco’s nightlife, across from a Metro bus station.

Young local artists have covered the walls with colorful artwork: beers, wines, and cocktails, such as pisco-sours, are available. Additionally, there will be sandwiches and appetizers.

Treff Pub Aleman

There are many traditional German restaurants and pubs in New York City. Still,Treff Pub Aleman is one of the best because it offers traditional music from the 80s and 90s, a pool table, and lots of delicious appetizers and snacks.

It is still one of the best places in Lima to spend a good time with friends and is owned and run by Peruvian. Opened in 1993 by two German friends (the other being Austrian), this was one of Lima’s first German beer bars.

Bar Capitán Meléndez

It seems like a temple dedicated to promoting pisco-based drinks, especially Chicanos; this is yet another pisco-themed establishment. In this cozy, friendly, and cozy spot, Roberto Melendez, the owner, and manager, currently creates various pisco-based cocktails each week. A small cafeteria attached to Bar Capitán Meléndez serves the best sandwiches, especially those made with ham and cheese. Not only that, but the bar also has traditional Peruvian drink recipes. As well as Peruvian coffee, there are also some other varieties. It is a welcoming atmosphere, and in the evening, 2×1 offers are available in pisco-sours and pisco chilcanos.

El Tayta

You can have a drink, listen to live music, or watch some show here, all the while mixing with locals in the heart of the Miraflores neighborhood. Tayta combines some components of Andean culture with the traditional concept of a bar (hence the Quechua name “Dad”). An example of this is the way that modern furnishings are paired with antiques. In addition, it is a bar that promotes friendly conversations, something that is more difficult to find nowadays. Finally, we recommend ordering a Pisco Tayta (the house drink) to complete your experience.

Although there are live music performances and dance classes throughout the monthly calendar, one thing is sure: The brewers at this location are not afraid of trying new things. The beer here has been infused with pumpkin, pastries, and fruit, and you can grab a growler or try it on tap. While you are walking out, check out the small shop selling homebrewing ingredients.

Best things to eat in Lima

With its coastal location, Lima is a culinary hot spot. In addition to being a hotspot for gastronomy, it is also a significant location in terms of business. You can find amazing food at every turn here, from street carts to restaurant five stars.

Incan food is influenced by Spanish flavors as well as Asian elements. An unofficial national dish called ceviche came from this juxtaposition – seafood marinated in lime juice and served with onion, peppers, and spices.

Most of the city’s best restaurants are located in the Miraflores district, but you can find great food all across the city. For visitors to Lima, El Chinito (not too far from the Plaza de Armas) is an indispensable sangucheria (Peruvian sandwich) that serves fried and roasted pork sandwiches (since 1960 known as chicharrón and roast pig).
