The Blue Room Kansas City

The Blue Room- named after the famous 1930s Street Hotel club in the Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, is a functional Jazz Club part of the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. The Club features some of the best original Jazz Musicians known to date and creates an ambiance worth listening to and moving on to. The Blue Room gives a platform to all those Local and National Jazz talents in an intimate setting. It doesn’t get any more authentic than The Blue Room and Green Lady Lounge as it already is. The best part is that no cover charge is taken on many of the singers performing most nights.

Want to be convinced even more to visit this place? DownBeat Magazine has nominated The Blue Room in its list of Top 100 Jazz Clubs of the World. The best part, even minors are allowed to attend the shows, provided that a parent or an adult accompanies them.

You can easily order cocktails or wines and beers from the staff there, who are super proficient and friendly with solid 1930s vibes. However, a little Pro-Tip; do grab a bite before you arrive here as this place does not serve food unless you’re visiting during Indigo Hours on Friday evening, where an appetizer buffet is available.

Destruction of A Jazz Monument

If you are looking for the exhilaration and excitement of jazz music the Blue Room is no longer the place to go. Only a few months ago the Blue Room was a jewel of Kansas City. On Monday nights one could hear music that thrilled and have the musical experience of a lifetime with Jazz played by a variety of musicians and sung by singers of all ages and backgrounds. The place was regularly full of an audience that loved the music and listened instead of talking. But the recent new management clearly does not have an appreciation of jazz. They would rather have R and B or commercially oriented music. The new management seems to be determined to kill the great music that once lived there and unfortunately, they are succeeding. It is now a disappointment, and I don’t take my lab or visitors from out of town there anymore. A lot of musicians don’t go there anymore. The value system of the new management is questionable. I don’t know why you would destroy such a unique and stellar institution. Perhaps making money is the motif. The music they play between sets needs to be jazz too instead of fusion or R and B. It is clear that new management lacks the sophistication to run a jazz venue. This is the city where the great Charlie Parker was born. The destructive actions of the new management dishonor and disrespect his memory. It’s possible the new owners don’t know who Charlie Parker is. Or they don’t care. Bottom line-If you want to hear something you can hear anywhere go the Blue Room.
